Abby (Golden Retriever)

Abby (aka Big Mama) is a 9 year old Golden Retriever. We got her 9 years ago

She's getting old now but she loves to swim and snuggle...and she's kind of a house marm so she likes to take care of the other pets by snuggling with them and grooming them! She is the sweetest thing and wouldn't hurt a flea (literally!) but is absolutely TERRIFIED of thunderstorms! She climbs up onto the couch and sticks her head in the cushions!

Gourds from your garden can make cute crafts. I used doll hair and regular acrylic paint for my "Breast Cancer Buddy". My daughter, Eryn, came up with the film canister idea for a craft show.

Buy at Garage Sales and Make Money

I love eBay and have been very lucky at finding valuable items to sell on ebay at garage sales. My latest "coup", a Getzen trumpet that I paid $25 for, and sold on eBay for $750. I invested $120 in having the trumpet professionally cleaned and checked out. I offered free next-day delivery with buy-it-now, and sold the trumpet in four days. Including the high cost of the shipping, and the ebay/paypal fees, I still netted almost $500!

That isn't the best part, though. My wife and I happen to live in an area that most yard and garage sales feature a lot of decorative brass items - candlesticks, animals, planters, and such - and most people are anxious to get rid of their brass items. Maybe it is because of the time spent keeping the brass polished, but for whatever reason, we are able to pick up a lot of brass each weekend for pennies on the dollar. We then cash in our brass at a recycling center. Lately, brass has paid as little as $1.75/lb. up to $2.10/lb. Our best weekend ever was just over $120 for brass that we had invested less than $30 in. We use the brass money to cover our gasoline expense on our garage sale days and usually have enough surplus to treat ourselves to a nice dinner out or to simply add to our "stash".

Tips To Reduce Your Stress

Here are FREE ways to reduce your stress. Try to cultivate a few of these into your lifestyle and see if your stress doesn't diminish significantly!

  • Learn to believe LESS is MORE .
  • Go to bed on time.
  • Get up on time so you can start the day unrushed.
  • Say NO to projects that don't fit your schedule or compromise your mental health.
  • Delegate (from unloading the dishwasher to the chair of your child's school committee).
  • Allow extra time to get things done and to get places-expect the unexpected.
  • Pace yourself - spread out big projects into manageable tasks.
  • PRAY, read your Bible, develop friendships with Godly people.
  • Take one day at a time.
  • Learn the difference between a WORRY and a CONCERN.
  • If you can't do anything about a situation, FORGET IT!
  • Laugh, then laugh some more (especially when you don't feel like it).
  • Live within your means.
  • Have back-ups (extra set of keys, stamps, $20 bill hidden away, etc.) to avoid a crisis.
  • Play with a puppy.
  • Do something for the KID in you EVERY day.
  • Eat right.
  • Get organized - put things away in their proper place. Less work later on and you can actually FIND the things you need to complete a project, dinner or task.
  • Improve the quality of your life by listening to books on tape in the car or on your MP3 player while driving or exercising.
  • Write it down whether it be your grocery list or your dreams, thoughts, hopes and fears (whether it be a journal or your daily planner).

  • Develop a forgiving attitude.
  • Be kind (especially to unkind people, they probably need it the most).
  • Get some exercise.
  • Talk LESS, Listen MORE.
  • SLOW DOWN (while you drive, talk, DO).
  • Keep a thankful or grateful list and review it when you are feeling down, overwhelmed or annoyed. You really are too blessed to be stressed!
  • Take your work seriously but don't take yourself seriously.
  • Sit on your ego.
  • Keep the right focus: think on what ever is true, noble, right, lovely, pure, admirable and excellent or praiseworthy.
and... make it a good day!

Halloween Tootsie Roll Pop Ghosts

For a fun Halloween treat, you will need Tootsie Roll Pops, squares of white fabric, rubber bands and a black Sharpie pen.

Cut the fabric into 4 inch squares. Place over Tootsie Roll Pop so the Pop is in the center of the fabric.

Pull tight over the Pop and secure with a rubber band on the stick directly under the Pop.

Using the Sharpie, dot on two eyes.

With scissors, cut the fabric to give it a torn, ragged look. Or you can leave the fabric intact.

Don't let the name lead you to believe they only carry lamps! Don't get me wrong, they carry a tremendous variety of lamps, lighting fixtures and Home Decor items! I had this huge gap between to windows in the front of my house, it was awful. I found a gorgeous metal wall art that took away that blah empty spot right over the garage in-between the windows!

They might be a little pricey but you can usually find what you're looking for. The free shipping and handling helps, and no tax in most states.

They do have a 120% low price guarantee and a free one year extended warranty. You can check their site for the specifics! You can sign up for email offers with coupon savings! I have had great shopping experiences here on hard to find items elsewhere!

Winter Your Patio Flowers Indoors

I live in a townhome and have a porch and patio to display flowers. Each fall before it freezes I bring a bunch of my plants inside -- pots and hanging baskets of geraniums, especially. I place them around a window in a spare room that gets pretty good light. They drop a lot of leaves at first, but gradually get accustomed to the indoor conditions. In the spring I take them back out again. I save so much money by not having to replace these plants every year. This year I started nasturtium, zinnia and vinca from seed in several pots and they turned out so pretty - the cost of the seeds is small. Every year I have a super nice display of flowers and it costs me hardly anything!

The Perfect Cookie

I've had many friends and relatives ask me how I make my cookies so soft, when theirs all turn out rock hard. Laughing to myself, I explain to them how easy it is! All you need to do is cut (decrease) the recommended time for baking by 2-3 minutes AND set the cookie sheet(s) on cooling racks. Leave the cookies on the racks for 10 minutes and then put on plates to get more air for another 15-20 minutes. Never refrigerate cookies, it dries them out! Now the reason for this is: When you take out the cookies "early", they continue to cook fully while cooling, without being over-done and hardening once out of the oven.

Link: Restaurant.com

I LOVE using the website http://restaurant.com/, where you can get discounted $10, $25,$50, and sometimes even $100 gift certificates for half off. This year when I went to Myrtle Beach, SC, for vacation, I made sure to see what they had to offer in that area and printed three certificates to bring with me.

I do suggest waiting until the end of the month for the best savings. All you do is google "restaurant.com coupons" and you can find codes to get up to 80% off at checkout. Also, the coupons are good for up to a year, so there is no rush to use them. Just be sure to check each restaurant's stipulations for using the coupons. There is always a minimum purchase required and sometimes you can't use them on certain days, but I have found them to be a great value and I have been able to try many new restaurants I might have never thought to go to.

Basil Natural Fly Repellent

Flies here in south Alabama are terrible. A friend told about a natural fly repellent. I decided to try it. It's basil! It actually works. I planted seeds in two flower pots, thinned them out, (three or four plants to a pot), also after the plants are six to eight inches tall, be sure to "head" the plants - pinch off the heads before they produce flowers. This also encourages the plants to bush out. Place out on your patio / deck or back door.

Before sitting the plants by the back door flies were continually coming in as the door opened. Problem solved! I will definitely use basil again next year. Flies do not like the strong odor / scent of basil. Even as small plants they did a very good job.

Painting River Rocks

My daughter loves to paint. So I put her to work! I bought a bag of larger river rocks at the Dollar Tree. She painted them in different designs. After they dried I sprayed them with a clear sealer spray. I put a few in all of my potted plants as decoration. I also used them in my flower garden as decorations. I got lots of compliments on them!

Aebleskiver Pan Keeps Sticking

I recently received an Aebleskiver pan and for the life of me I can't get them to come out. I've followed all the directions to the letter but no luck. I can't manage to turn them over with the sticks provided. And even though I've sprayed the pan as directed, they always stick. I thought maybe the pan needed to be seasoned and did that, but still no luck. Can somebody tell me what I may be doing wrong? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

How Do You Clean Gas Stove Burners?

How do you clean a gas stove with burner caps, grates and a burner plate that are all gray in color and similar to cast iron? The grates and caps are all removable. My stove is by General Electric. I have been using SOS pads and scrubbing them everyday to keep them clean.

I am looking for an easier way to clean them. I didn't know if I could spray something like Easy Off Bam on them, let it sit for a little while and come back and just wash them off with minimal work. Please share your tips. Thanks.

Natural Shower Tile Spray Recipe

Does anyone know of a natural shower spray? Although I know it works, I don't want to use bleach because it is a poison. I am trying to eliminate all such cleaning products from my home.
